EYFS Overview

At Victoria School we use a range of programmes/schemes to IMPLEMENT the progression of knowledge and skills across the curriculum. Our Early years foundation stage from two years old, three years old, and into reception we have designed a bespoke curriculum to meet the needs of our pupils. We have designed a curriculum that uses birth to five, development matters and a language and communication toolkit. Our children build knowledge over the Nursery and Reception years to ensure they are ready to progress through the KS1 curriculum.

Implementation is through directed learning and interest-led activities can provide new knowledge, or an opportunity to revisit or further develop learning. These activities are planned to promote children’s individual development in each of the areas of the EYFS curriculum. Alongside our play-based learning we also deliver a timetable of adult-directed taught sessions. Adult-led activities provide opportunities for introducing new knowledge, vocabulary and experiences, and for developing and practicing skills.

Prime areas of learning All three of the prime areas of learning are implemented through adult-led activities and child-initiated learning. • communication and language • physical development • personal, social and emotional development.

The areas of learning and development for EYFS

There remains seven areas of learning and development in the framework. These are aimed to shape educational programs in early years settings. All areas of learning and development are important and inter-connected. Three areas are still referred to as prime areas and these are supported by the four specific areas of learning.

Prime areas of learning

• communication and language

• physical development

• personal, social and emotional development

The specific areas of learning

• literacy

• mathematics

• understanding the world

• expressive arts and design

Each of the seven areas are subdivided into different aspects but need to be seen as a whole.
